Poster Research

I am also going to create a poster for our film. For this I need to understand the Cliches and conventions of posters, I can do this by evaluating current posters from other films from the same Genre. Below are several examples of Poster from the Horror/Thriller genre. I have chosen all of the posters below as I think they all are effective Horror posters, I will list what makes each seperate poster good.

This is a poster for One Missed Call, in the poster shows a creepy face on the phone. The thing I like about this poster is the fact it has a good Unique selling point, in this case it is the eyes. They are what looks like a females mouth screaming, in this case this is what will draw the attention of the possible audience of the film.

This is a poster for the Amityville Horror. In this poster you can see a person holding a shotgun in front of a house. But all this is depicted in what looks to be the reflection of a knife. I like this poster as it is obvious it is a Horror film and will attract the target audience very well. It does this well as the knife, the shotgun and the font all suggest that the film is a Horror. I especially like the font and the way that the Y has dripped as if its written in blood. I would like to do something like this in my poster as I think it is very effective.

I like this poster as it clearly shows the main character of the film that this is a sequel too. I think this is an effective method of bringing back a previous fan base of the film, which can overly help to grow the sales of the film.

Types of Shots

Within our film we will be using a large variety of shots. Different shots give different perspectives on the situation within the shot and can be used to make a character strong or scary or make a character seem likeable and weak. In our film several characters need to be portrayed in several ways, such as the victim being weak compared to the killer.

Extreme close-up    ECU     This is a very close shot showing the detail of an object or the physical features of a person.           To make the viewer aware of some specific detail in the film. It can be used to heighten tension.

Close-up           This is a shot taken of a person’s head from just above the head to the top of the upper chest. It can also be used to film an object at close range. It contains little or no background.            This used to introduce a character and allows the character to show emotions. It can be used to heighten tension.

Medium close-up       This shows the upper half of the body. The shot is taken from the above the head to lower chest.  Good for conversation between two characters.

Medium shot              This shows half of the body. The shot is taken from above the head to just below the waist.            This allows you to get to know the character more closely by viewing their facial expressions and body language.

Medium long shot     This shows the whole person as well as some of the background.         Places the person in context.

Long shot       This shows the whole person and other characters, but the background dominates the shot.          This allows the viewer to understand the relationship between the characters and their environment.

Extra long shot    This shows the landscape of the film or a barely visible character in the distance of a background.           This gives information to the viewer about where the action is to take place. It often sets the atmosphere of a film.

Horror Poster Analysis

This is a Sinister poster, this is a very recent horror film that has just been released. I believe this is an effective poster for several reasons.
One reason for this being an effective poster is the fact that the poster is the same as the the film cover. I believe that this is an effective factor of the film poster as it will help be a brand. People will see the poster and remember it, then when you see the film cover you will remember the poster and hopefully be persuaded to purchase the film.
A second reason why this is an effective poster is that it helps show the possible consumers what the get when the watch the film. It is obvious that the film is a horror, due to the creepy face drawn in blood on the wall, the cracked decrepit wall, and the strange child.
Another reason I like this poster is just the layout it doesn't show any overused cliches within posters which gives it a special unique selling point which I believe will help sell the film.

Finalised Film Treatment

Our film is to be called Faded Delusion. It will be a pyschodelic horror film, based on a mythical creature called the Slenderman, we have chosen this as an inspiration for our creature as it is a mythical creature it has no copyright and we couldn't be sued for copying an idea.
The story would begin with a series of killings in the location of surrey, getting noticed by an inspiring news reporter, played by Sam De Almeida who is an established actor having worked in one of my productions before. He would then deciede to try and report on the story and sell his story to a news station in an attempt to kick off his carrer. The mythical creature will then start to stalk and torment him by following and watching him from a distance never confronting him just lingering. However his interest into the murders has brought him to the polices attention, and the story climaxes with a chase into the woods and a 10 minute chase and torment scene where the film finishes on the police that chased him and the reporter going missing. The film will star myself playing the mythical creature, the Slenderman, Sarah Huck, as the mother of a Victim and several other actors.

Choice of Camera

                                            Photo Camera                              Film Camera

For this I had two possibilities to choose between, one of which was my own personal high quality photo camera which had a record setting, or I could decide to use the camera that the school provided for me that is specifically designed for filming.

In the end the Film camera was better for the task in every specification, one being quality. For me this is one of, if not the most important factor being that when being viewed the Film camera gave a better quality which is what is needed for my trailer as it will help give a professional appearance.
The second was being agility, the film camera is much smaller, compact and lighter allowing in theory a larger range of shots, which will also be needed to give my trailer a professional finish.
The third reason was the special quality of the film cameras, they are specially protected to withstand drops and also work underwater. Giving yet another type of shot, if included an underwater shot would give a good effect to the film.

Budget

Me and my partner have decided that for this trailer that we are willing to create a budget, a budget is a set amount of money that is allowed to be spent during the production of the film. Most films have budgets that range into the millions to help pay Actors wages, props, sets, locations and many other things. However in our film we won't need to pay wages as we will have volunteers. The budget will most likely be spent on costumes and props to help make the film as realistic as possible.

We have decided to set the budget for our trailer at £30, which is £15 each. This should be enough to help pay for costumes that we do not already own and any props such as fake blood.

Target Audience

We need to deciede our target audeince so we can focus our trailer towards this audience. Our target is a bit of an Art house audience, being anyone who is a fan of online forums and blogs such as 4chan who will know who the Slenderman is, however the film will not just appeal to them but to horror fans as a general as well as it will follow conventions and cliches of the genre they enjoy. The main audience that enjoy horror films a 16 - 34 year olds with about 60% of them being male and 40% being female. Knowing this we selectively tailor the film to the likes of this target audience.
